Will You Be Ready for the Next Earthquake?
The recent earthquake in Napa is a good reminder that we live in a region that is at high risk for natural disasters. The keys to surviving and recovering from a disaster are education and preparation.
The Santa Clara Fire Department is offering a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class which begins in late October. This is a very comprehensive and informative class which allows citizens to become more prepared for disasters which may strike our community. In the event of a large disaster such as an earthquake, the normal first responders such as Fire, Police and EMS will be overwhelmed by the amount of emergencies. As a result citizens will have to rely on each other for help.
The CERT program presents citizens with the facts about what to expect following a major disaster and the importance of preparation. It also trains students in critical life saving skills with an emphasis on decision making, safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people. The 21 hour class provides training in areas which include disaster preparedness, fire extinguisher use, medical care in disasters, search & rescue, and disaster psychology. Students will participate in both classroom lectures as well as hands-on training in all areas.
The schedule for the upcoming class is:
Tuesday October 28, 6 PM – 9 PM, Emergency Preparedness
Thursday October 30, 6PM – 9PM, Fire Control, Hazmat, Utilities
Tuesday November 4, 6PM – 9PM, Disaster Medicine Part 1
Thursday November 6, 6PM – 9PM, Disaster Medicine Part 2
Tuesday November 11, 6PM – 9PM, Search and Rescue
Saturday November 15, 9AM – 4PM, Terrorism, Psychology, Disaster Simulation Exercise
All classes will be held at the Santa Clara Fire Department Training Center, 1900 Walsh Ave. Students will be issued safety equipment including a helmet, gloves, goggles, safety vest, and pack. There is a nominal fee of $25.00 per person.
